View from Dhall (Jenelle Sills)

This is the view of the commons from Dhall. This is my favorite place to sit in Dhall because I get to watch people as they come and go into the dining hall. This location is pretty easy to find if you’re already on the main side of campus. You simply walk in the direction of food and the commons will suck you in.
This space is usually used for student organizations to advertise events for fundraise. As you can see in this picture, there are still chalk markings on the ground for the Walk For Hope event that happened at JMU last weekend. I feel like the campus designers intened for this space to be used this way because there is an open space which vaguely looks like a stage and it is in front of, what used to be, the only dining hall on the campus of JMU. I think this space could be improved with more music playing from it. Sometimes there will be music playing because of organizations but it would be cool if JMU provided music from it all the time. It is especially enjoyable when there is Christmas music playing from it during the December time of year, it would be nice if organizations didn’t have to provide that luxury for us.
This space will shape my memory because it will remind me of the view I have had of many memorable dinners with many special people that I have met at JMU. It will remind me of watching people without their knowing and giggling with friends and enhancing my Dhall experience to be a moment of being at the center of a panopticon (as discussed in class). After all, who doesn’t enjoy people watching?
